Radiant Heating Floor Installation in Weston, MA | Millhawlk Design & Construction
This client wanted to renovate their existing bathroom by replacing the plastic shower pan with tile and adding a radiant electric heated floor.
For homeowners seeking a quick, cost-effective, and efficient heating solution for a small bathroom, radiant electric floors can be an excellent choice compared to hydronic (boiler-based) systems. Unlike hydronic heating, electric radiant floors require no boiler connection and use minimal electrical service, making installation simpler and faster.
Installation Process
We prepared the shower curb with GoBoard cement board, designed specifically for wet areas. Next, we installed and wired a 120V radiant heating mat, ensuring even heat distribution. While electric radiant floors provide comfort and easy installation, one consideration compared to hydronic heating is the long-term energy cost, as some increase in utility bills may be noticed.
Finishes & Fixtures
After installing the heating mat, we moved forward with the tile work and curb transition:
Flooring: Hexagon tile for the main bathroom floor
Shower curb & niche: Penny mosaic tile for a stylish finish
Shower walls: Classic subway tiles
Colors: All shades of gray with white grout for contrast
Bench & curb: White granite bench top and curb transition stone
Additional features included a light/fan in the shower area, as well as complete installation of fixtures and black shower trims. To finish the renovation, we applied two coats of Benjamin Moore white paint, giving the bathroom a clean and refreshed look.
