At 17 Breakneck Hill, the client wanted to install solar panels, but the existing roof was in poor condition. Based on recommendations from the solar panel company, a full roof replacement was necessary. Installing solar panel bolts on old shingles can cause leaks, and if the roof needs replacement in the future, additional charges would apply to remove the panels. Therefore, when planning to install new solar panels, it is highly recommended to replace the roof shingles first to prevent potential problems.
With that in mind, we carefully stripped the roof to avoid damaging the existing sheathing.
After that, proper preparation was required. We began by installing the underlayment from Everbilt.
Next, we installed a 3-foot strip of Grace Vycor Ice & Water Shield along the entire roof perimeter to seal both the edges and the underlayment.
After preparation, our team began installing the architectural GAF asphalt shingles. The total roof area covered was 3,500 sq. ft., and the installation proceeded smoothly. The trickiest parts, as usual, were the hip valleys and 90-degree transitions, but nothing particularly challenging in this project.
The permitting process—yes, a permit is required for roof replacement—was straightforward. In less than a week, we had the permit in hand. The entire installation process, from stripping the old roof to completing the new shingles, took just three days.
